The Order of Malta Jape a Lem Memorial Clinic (the Clinic) has been operating in Comoro District, Dili, since November 2017. The Clinic is named after the grandfather of our landlords – Timor Plaza – who provide the building space as a donation. While the building itself was new at opening and is of high construction standards, the location – Comoro District – was chosen as it is one of the poorest in the Capital, with very limited healthcare services.
Staffing includes two doctors – one of whom is European-trained, plus nurses, orderlies, cleaners and administrative staff. Currently the Clinic serves 6-700 patients onsite per month.
It is open five days per week and is free to all Timorese citizens. While there is an active focus on maternal and infant health, all patients presenting are seen, whether with infections and diseases, tumours or minor procedures.
The Order of Malta has a continuing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Timorese Ministry of Health allowing the Order to operate its medical services independently and without interference, but at the same time in an integrated way, and with Government support.
